Official says Lebanon granted rights for Israeli field to Novatek

TEL AVIV, Jan 31 (PRIME) -- Lebanon has awarded the rights to develop Block 9 natural gas site in the Mediterranean Sea to a consortium of Russian independent gas producer Novatek, France’s total and Italy’s Eni, although the field belongs to Israel, Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said in a news conference on Wednesday.

“They have published a tender for the gas field, including the Block 9, which is ours by any definition,” he said. “The respectable firms that partook in it are making a very serious mistake as it goes against all rules and protocols envisaged in such cases.”

In late 2017, the Lebanese council of ministers approved provision of rights for development of Block 4 and Block 9 shelf gas sites in the Mediterranean Sea to the consortium.
